WELCOME TO THE RADIO STRATOSPHERE |
Simply put, the Zenith Stratosphere model 1000Z is one of the most beautiful and unique radios ever designed and produced. This radio, with its $750 price tag, marked the pinnacle of radio opulence during the Great Depression. Its tall skyscraper-like deco cabinet is decorated with rare exotic woods with stunning inlay design patterns that make the cabinet a work-of-art. We will explore behind the large black dial of the Stratosphere where you will find an amazing radio with a unique, movie theater quality sound system. The radio’s amazing sound is often overlooked due in part to this radio's extreme rarity. The 1000Z Stratosphere is so rare that most people will never see one in person or experience its sound. There were only 350 produced in late 1934 and early 1935. It is an honor and a great privilege to own one. There are less than 50 of these radios known to exist in the world today. My goal, through the Radio Stratosphere
website, is to give my visitors the kind of
experience that will come close to actually
being there in the room, seeing and
listening to one of these surviving radio
marvels. I also hope to use this website to
take my guests on a retrospective look at
the life and times of the 1930's where art
and design were king and radio would change
our world forever. |
